Into the Clouds - NYFW SS25
The runways were feeling downright ethereal in New York. Here's my favorite trend from the shows there.
Hi, friend! It’s been a while … AGAIN! I’ve finally wrapped up the “big project” I was mentioning last time, and now I’ve just got to wait to see how it all turned out. I know it’s annoying to be so vague, so I apologize, and I promise to reveal what’s going on as soon as it makes sense to.
The waiting game is so tough. In this age of instant gratification, same-day delivery, constant contact, and 24-hour news, it seems insane to have to wait for anything. But I’m trying to think of it as a character-building exercise. I think instant gratification turns us into monsters sometimes. We demand, we receive. But maybe we don’t need things now, now, now. Maybe there’s something beautiful about putting all our best intentions toward something and then giving it time to unfold. Planting a seed and watching it emerge from the ground and inch toward the sky.
I’ve been entertaining myself during my waiting period by diving into the NYFW shows. I’ve seen some arguments online that NYFW is on it’s last leg, and I understand why people are saying that. Some of the city’s biggest designers have either moved to Europe or show off the regular calendar. But this season, the designers who did show during NYFW proved the city’s legitimacy. My favorite shows were Tory Burch (with which I have some history, but I truly believe this label put forward a great collection - wearable yet forward-thinking, and with fabulous accessories!), Proenza Schouler, Tibi, and Toteme. Jason Wu presented my favorite collection of his to date. I was always put off by his girly, flouncy, high-maintenance vibe, but this season, his clothes were languid and elegant, with nary a bow in sight. Alaia also showed during NYFW this season, which was fun. Some of the clothes were less-than-wearable, but the concepts were inspiring, and the accessories, again, were covetable.
I’ve talked about white-on-white before, and it appears this trend is continuing to evolve for SS25. The innovation here is a bit of volume and sheer/opaque play. Organza or chiffon layers peek out beneath more solid fabrics, and drawstrings, bubble hems, and gathering give the looks a cloud-like shape. Diaphanous, buoyant, and lighter than air.
Here are my favorite runway looks that speak to this trend:
L to R (all from Vogue.com): Khaite; Jason Wu; Toteme; Tibi; Maria McManus
I know we’re changing seasons at the moment, so dressing like a cloud may not seem like the best route, but we still have a month or two of warmish weather (depending on where you live), so it’s worth it to snag a few of these ethereal pieces now (as many are on sale!), wear them while you can, and bring them back out when spring comes.
Vince dress featuring sheer/opaque effects; Bite top with lovely texture and interesting collar; sheer pashmina on Anthro; Anine Bing flats - the tie is so cute!; Matteau fisherman pants that I’ve been coveting for a while now
That’s all for now! Stay tuned for my wrap-ups of the London, Milan, and Paris shows soon!
xx,
Joanna
